Spring Newsletter

I’m excited to introduce my new seasonal newsletter. At the change of each season, I will be updating you all on what I’ve been doing in the world of cookbooks and in life. It’s like a blog, but I will email / post in this style 4 times a year. For those that do not know me, I’m Matt Hanson. I started Culinary Perspectives about 3 years ago. It started as a project for grad school that turned into an obsession. In these newsletters, I’ll be updating you all on the books I’m working on, new books and my life in general.

As many of you know, I am a full time high school teacher. I have a wonderful daughter, who is almost 2 years old. small child. Trying to find time to work on the books is tough with the family / work balance. We’re figuring it out as we go, but it has been an interesting process. By doing a lot of trade shows and festivals, I’ve met a ton of interesting people that are willing to collaborate with / hire me to help tell their family stories and history. So far this year, I’ve filmed 5 new recipes. I will be doing the 6th one this weekend.

I am in the process of finishing up and printing the following books:

- Maryland Beaten Biscuits (was a custom book, but with the family’s permission, I’m making it available to you all)

- French Cakes

- Ron’s Wet Bottom Shoo Fly Pie

I have filmed the following recipes with clients and will be making the books in the near future

- Nora’s Greek Roasted Leg of Lamb

- Bacalao (Cuban Fish Soup)

- Picadillo (Cuban Sloppy Joe)

- Caldo Gallego (Spanish Soup)

- Easter Bread

I am also working on custom books for 3 clients. Yes, I have been very busy.

Outside of the books, I’ve been exploring other photography and art opportunities. I have been accepted to show and sell my books at two local book festivals this spring. The first one is the Kensington Day of the Book Festival on April 28th (https://dayofthebook.com). I will also be giving my first book talk / lecture at this show! I will be talking about my process and how creating books has changed my approach to art and photography. The second event I will be at is the Gaithersburg Book Festival (gaithersburgbookfestival.org). This event is on Saturday, May 18th.

I have also joined the Central Maryland Photographers Guild. I wanted to join a local photography club / organization as a professional development opportunity. I’ve also started doing freelance photography with my brother in law. Right now, we’re focused on corporate headshots (that’s me below!) and product shots (that’s my state championship ring from when I coached high school lacrosse).

Follow me on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/culinaryperspectives/). I usually will put promo codes on there for new books and events that I will be participate at.
